How Fingerprint Analysis Is Done?

Fingerprint evidence is considered to be one of the vital evidence to prove the authenticity of the evidence. Fingerprint can be collected from any kind of solid surface and also from the human body.

After taking fingerprint development, the sample of fingerprint is sent for analysis. There are computerized systems available where the sample of the fingerprint is compared with the national database for fingerprints in order to find the matches.

In order to verify the fingerprint following steps are involved to confirm the evidence as valid or not.

·         Initial check

The fingerprint sample is visually checked to determine whether it is really sufficient enough for comparison. In case, it is not sufficient then it is rejected and sufficient quantity of the sample is demanded. Fingerprint comparison cannot be done with bits and pieces of the sample. Full view of the sample must be available in order to compare it.

·         Comparison

Comparison is done by an experienced analyst who compares the sample of the with the fingerprint of the suspect. The characteristics of both the fingerprints are compared by keeping them on same scale under a bright light.

·         Evaluation

Here the analyst will determine after the comparison under bright light, whether the finger print has come from the same finger or not. If there are dissimilarities or due to poor quality of sample proper conclusion cannot be done then there can be inconclusive results.

·         Verification

In case the evaluation of the fingerprint is confirmed then it is verified by another examiner independently and he may either support the above evaluation result or refute it.

If the second examiner also confirms it then it is taken as evidence.
