Hydraulic Ram Pump – How Does It Work

Ram pumps have been used for many decades. They are beneficial for a few reasons. Firstly, they do not need any power for their operation which makes them eco-friendly. They work with the force of water. Secondly, they are very simple to operate. It only needs two parts for their operation. The principle of its working is very simple.

What is a pre-requisite to use a hydraulic pump?

To use a hydraulic ram pump, it is needed that you have a water source located above the pump.

Working of a hydraulic pump

You can run a water pipe from the pond into the pump. The hydraulic pump has got a valve that enables water to flow via this pipe and increase the speed. Once the water level reaches to its maximum speed, then the valve slams shut. Once it shuts down, the flowing water builds a great deal of force inside the pump because of the inertia. This pressure forces to open a 2nd valve. If you want to get more information follow our website.

High-pressure water when passes through the 2nd valve inside the delivery pipe, then the pressure inside the pump reduces. The first valve opens again to enable water to pass through and build the momentum again. This closes the 2nd valve. This cycle continues. The delivery pipe rises to some distance above the pump as well as the water source.

Disadvantage of hydraulic pump

One of the major drawbacks of a ram pump is that it leads to a lot of water wastage. It only loses 10% of the water that it consumes. It is the amount that raises in the delivery pipe. The remaining amount of water flows outside the pump with the development of momentum in the pipe.

Conclusion

The unique characteristic of the hydraulic pump is that it does not require any external power source.

How Does Any Hydraulic Flow Control Valve Function?

To regulate the pressure and flow rate of liquids or gases through various pipe lines, flow control valves are used. For optimizing any performance of the system, it is essential to use flow control valves. That is dependent on flow control in a variable flow area.  Let us try to understand how hydraulic flow control valve functions and what are the considerations for selecting the right hydraulic flow control valve for any application.

How does it work?

There are many unique designs available for flow control valves for different sets of applications. Therefore, understanding their work is important for choosing the right type of valve for any kind of application. Following are few common types of flow control valves.

  • Diaphragm
  • Ball
  • Butterfly
  • Needle
  • Plug

When you look at the hydraulic circuits, there are number of different hydraulics parts used for controlling the flow and actuation of sophisticated electronic controls.

·         Flow regulators
·         Orifices
·         Bypass flow regulators
·         Pressure compensated variable flow valves
·         Demand compensated flow controls
·         Deceleration valves
·         Priority valves
·         Flow dividers
·         Proportional flow control valves
·         Proportional flow logic valves
·         Rotary flow dividers
·         Pressure compensated proportional flow control valves

To control the flow rate of fluid, control valves have aperture that may either open or close to increase or decrease the flow rate. The simplest option for this is ball valve. Ball has got hole at the centre and as the handle is turned, the hole gets aligned at the opening of valves so that it can allow the flow of liquid. If you want to stop the flow, the handle is used in such a way that it positions perpendicular to the hole position and the flow of fluid is obstructed.
